Adopt a Rescued Guinea Pig Month

March 1, 2018
Did you know that March is Adopt A Rescued Guinea Pig Month? Guinea pigs can make very charming and lovable animal companions! Here, a Fayetteville, NC vet discusses basic Guinea pig care.

Basics

Guinea pigs are very tame and friendly, and can make great kids’ pets. These little guys usually do best with a same-sex buddy or two to play with and snuggle up to. They usually live about 4 to 8 years, so make sure you are ready to commit to your tiny furball for his entire life.

Cage

For one Guinea pig, you’ll need a cage that is at least 7.5 square feet. If you have more than one, you’ll want a bigger cage. One way to increase your cute pet’s living area without taking up more space in your home is to add a second story with ramp access. We recommend choosing a wire cage with a solid floor. Next, you’ll need to add a safe substrate, such as aspen. Fleece blankets are also fine. Avoid pine or cedar substrates, as they are toxic to pets. Your furry buddy will also need a hidey-hole, dishes, and toys. A litterbox and hayrack are useful as well.

Toys

Provide your adorable furball with lots of toys, including plenty of suitable chew toys. You can make many cute Guinea pig toys out of wood, wicker, or cardboard items. Look online for great DIY options. Just avoid giving the little guy anything with small parts, sharp edges, or dangling threads. Ask your vet for more information.

Food

Guinea pigs need lots of quality grass hay, such as Timothy hay. Your furry friend can have commercial pellets for breakfast and dinner. You’ll want to supplement these things with safe, suitable produce. Some good options are lettuce, sweet peppers, and Swiss chard. Ask your vet for specific recommendations, including safe and unsafe foods, serving sizes, and suitable treats. Be sure to include lots of Vitamin C, which is crucial to Guinea pigs.

Health

Just like any other pet, Guinea pigs can get sick. Keep an eye out for warning signs, such as fever, lethargy, hair loss, diarrhea, or lack of appetite. Contact your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss in your pet’s appearance, appetite, or behavior. Please call us, your Fayetteville, NC pet hospital, for your Guinea pig’s care needs. We’re dedicated providing excellent veterinary care.
