Common Dog Care Mistakes

September 1, 2023
September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month. Fido is a truly extraordinary pet and companion: he’s loyal, loving, affectionate, smart, protective, and, of course, adorable. However, your canine pal needs proper care. Providing great food and proper veterinary care are crucial, but a good dog care regimen also entails many other elements, some of which are often overlooked. A local Fayetteville, NC vet goes over some of the most common dog care mistakes in this article.

Dog Care Mistake #1: Lack Of Socialization

Socialization plays a huge role in Fido’s mental and emotional development. Dogs that weren’t properly socialized as puppies are much more likely to have behavioral issues, such as fearfulness or aggression.

Dog Care Mistake #2: Letting Fido Get Fat

Obesity is (literally) a very big problem among our four-legged friends. Fido’s love of bacon may be cute, but it can also be harmful. There’s nothing wrong with offering your furry friend treats, but don’t go overboard. Proper exercise is also important.

Dog Care Mistake #3: Incomplete/Improper Training

Few things affect Fido’s safety and behavior as much as training … or lack thereof. If your canine buddy isn’t properly trained, he could be a danger to himself and/or anyone (human or animal) that he interacts with. Make sure your furry pal knows and obeys basic commands, such as Sit, Stay, Heel, Come, and Lay Down.

Dog Care Mistake #4: Lack Of Veterinary Care

We know, Fido would rather go to the dog park than the animal clinic. However, he’ll be healthier—and therefore, happier—with proper care. That entails spay/neuter surgery, vaccines, exams, and parasite control. It’s also important to watch for signs of illness or injury, and make emergency appointments as needed. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Dog Care Mistake #5: Not Enough Stimulation

Fido is intelligent, curious, and active, and he’s pretty much hardwired for lots of running around. Your furry bff will get bored and restless with nothing to do all day but stare at the walls. Make sure your pup is getting enough stimulation and entertainment. That includes toys, walks, and playtime.

Dog Care Mistake #6: Lack Of ID

Microchips and tags may not be large, but they could one day save your canine companion’s life. Nearly one in three dogs go missing at some point in their lives! Please contact us with questions or concerns about your dog’s health or care. As your Fayetteville, NC pet clinic, we’re here to help!
