Getting Fido Ready For Winter

October 15, 2022
Love it or hate it, winter is just around the corner. Some of our canine pals love to run and play in the snow. Others will probably spend the next few months curled up in their beds, waiting for spring. Regardless of what camp your pooch falls into, you’ll want to take some steps to get him ready for the cold weather. A Fayetteville, NC vet lists some things to put on your to-do list below.

Clothing

If your canine companion has thin fur, he’ll probably need a jacket or sweater for those frigid nights. Make sure that your pup’s things are clean, in good shape, and still fit him properly. It’s best to have a few different outfits for Fido: that way, if one of his outfits is wet, dirty, or in the wash, he’ll still have something to wear.

Food Change

You may need to tweak your pet’s menu as the temperatures drop. Pups that spend a lot of time outdoors will need extra calories at this time of year, as do puppies, nursing mamas, and very active dogs. Fido may also benefit from supplements, such as glucosamine or fish oil. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Doghouse Repair

Dogs should always live indoors with the rest of the family. However, they do enjoy having spots to hang out in outside. Make sure that Fido’s doghouse is clean and in good repair. You can hang thick plastic strips in the door to keep wind, rain, and snow out.

Beauty Session

If you take Fido to the groomer, then you can just continue his appointments as usual. However, if you bathe him at home, give him a good bath now, before it gets too cold. You don’t want your furry friend to get chilly as he’s drying off, and you definitely don’t want to walk a wet dog in the cold. Keeping up with your furry friend’s paw care is also important. Stock up on paw balm, and keep your pet’s claws clipped.

Bedding

Fido often sleeps more when it’s cold or dreary, and who can blame him? Make sure that your furry bff has a comfy bed to snuggle up in on those chilly nights! Orthopedic beds are great choices for senior pooches and large breeds. Do you have questions about your dog’s health or care? Contact us, your Fayetteville, NC animal clinic, today!
