Fall Grooming For Dogs

Fall has fallen: the season of pumpkin-flavored everything is upon us. As the seasons change, you’ll also want to make a few adjustments to your furry buddy’s beauty regimen. A Marion, IA area vet offers some advice on this below.
Brushing
Autumn is one of the peak shedding times, so you’ll probably need to brush Fido a bit more than usual. If your furry pal is a heavy shedder, head outside for those beauty sessions. The fur will just blow away, rather than ending up all over, well, everything.Bathing
Many of our canine friends don’t get as many baths in winter as they do in summer. Winter isn’t a good time to take Fido for a brisk walk to help him dry off! If you take your pet to a salon, book an appointment before it gets cold. It also isn’t too soon to book a pre-holiday appointment.Paw Pads
Fido’s toe beans may need some extra attention as it gets cold. Snaw, salt, sand, ice, and chemical de-icers can all take a toll on your pet’s paw pads. Use paw balm or wax to moisturize and protect those sensitive paw pads. Petroleum jelly or coconut oil will also work in a pinch. If your canine companion is shy about having his feet handled, give him a treat to distract him during his pawdicures. (Speaking of de-icing products, this is a good time to stock up on pet-safe ones.)Nails
Claw trims are also important. Fido’s nails won’t give him good traction if they’re too long. That not only makes walking uncomfortable, it also increases the risk of slips and falls, which can cause serious injuries, such as CCL tears. Keep those nails clipped! If your canine companion isn’t comfortable with this, try using a nail grinder. Or, just bok him an appointment at your vet or groomer’s.Doggy Dental Treats
Don’t forget about Fido’s cute grin! Brushing your pup’s teeth is really the best way to keep them in good shape. If he isn’t having it, you can put doggy toothpaste on a dental chew or Nylabone. Dental rinses and oral flakes may also help.Winter Wear
