Bringing Your New Cat Home

Be Prepared

Before the big day, make sure that you have everything Fluffy will need ready and waiting for her. This includes toys, treats, bedding, food, a litterbox and litter, dishes, and grooming supplies. Your furball will also appreciate having some kitty furniture, such as a cat tower, and a good scratching post.

Kittyproofing

Make your home safe for your furry friend by removing or securing anything that could be dangerous for her. This includes things like toxic plants, chemicals, medication, ropes and wires, plastic bags and ties, and anything small or sharp.

Provide A Safe Space

Changing homes is a big deal to cats, and can be quite traumatizing for them. Put all of Fluffy’s things in a quiet spot, such as a spare bedroom, at first. This will give your kitty a comfy, safe spot where she can relax and adjust to her new home.

Make Introductions Slowly

Do you have other pets? Keep your furry pals separated at first. First impressions are a big deal to kitties, so you’ll want to proceed slowly. Ask your vet for specific advice.

You Can’t Hurry Love

Don’t force attention on your feline friend. Cats often get scared if they feel cornered, or get picked up against their will. It’s very important to let Fluffy come to you when she wants to cuddle. Win her heart by talking to her, playing with her, and offering her toys, treats, and, of course, catnip.

Doctor’s Appointment

One of the first things you’ll want to do is schedule a veterinary appointment. Fluffy will need a thorough exam. You’ll also want to make sure she is fixed, microchipped, and current on her vaccines and parasite control.

Be Patient

Cats are all different. Some furballs are bold and friendly, and will immediately sprawl out in the middle of the floor. Others are quite timid, and will need time to adjust and feel safe. Let Fluffy have the time she needs to get used to her new home. You’ll have that little motor going in no time!
