Summer is well on the way! Many people like to cool off on sweltering days by taking a dip in the pool. Quite a few of our canine companions also enjoy swimming. Swimming can be both fun and beneficial for Man’s Best Friend. However, it can also be dangerous. A Fayetteville, NC veterinarian offers some pool safety tips for Fido below.
This Way Out
The first thing you want to do is teach your furry friend where the pool exit is. This is absolutely crucial! You need to make sure that Fido can get out of the pool if he ever falls in. Don’t just show him once: take some time with this training, and make sure that he really remembers.Landmarks
We recommend putting a few landmarks near the pool exit, so Fido has a visual marker. Potted trees are a good option, but you can also use a patio set, life preserver, or pool noodles. Anything that will stand out will work.Covers
Keep the pool fenced off when it isn’t in use. This is especially important if you have a puppy, an older dog, or any pooch that could be in trouble if they fall in. Pool covers aren’t a solution: they can actually be dangerous. Fido may not realize that it’s a solid surface, and could fall through if he tries to walk on it.Paw Care
Dog’s paws get very delicate when they’re wet, just like human skin does. Fido could get blisters running around on sand, tar, or cement after going swimming. Keep your canine pal on soft surfaces after he gets out of the water. You can also use paw balm to protect his furry feet.Coat
Dogs can get sunburned, just like people can. Pooches with pale and/or thin fur are most at risk. Fido may need a bit of sunscreen, particularly on his cute nose. Also, be sure to rinse your four-legged friend off when he gets out of the water.Water
Make sure that your canine buddy always has plenty of fresh water. This one may be easier said than done, but try not to let Fido slurp up water from the pool.
