How to Pamper a Guinea Pig

April 15, 2015
Guinea pigs, or cavies, are one of the most popular pocket pets in the modern world. Cute, sweet, friendly and playful, Guinea pigs, or cavies, definitely have a way of melting hearts! It’s only natural for you to want your little buddy to be completely happy in his new home. In this article, your Fayetteville NC vet discusses pampering your cavy.

Toys

Cavies are very playful and curious, and also love exploring! Make sure your furry little buddy has plenty of fun toys to keep him amused. Mazes and tunnels are quite popular with these tiny furballs. Little balls are another fun choice. Reward toys, which have food hidden in them that your pet has to work for, are also a good option. You can either buy toys, or look online for lots of great DIY toys.

Chewables

Guinea pigs need to chew to keep their teeth from overgrowing, so chewing is very important to your little buddy’s dental health. Provide your cavy with plenty of chewable toys. Chew sticks are fine and tend to go over very well with these little ones. Toys made out of wood, wicker, cardboard, or even paper are also suitable.

Cozies

Cozies are basically soft, comfy little beds for pocket pets. You can purchase some super cute and very comfortable ones in stores or online, or you can make your own. Be sure to use materials that won’t tear off in long threads that could choke or entangle your little pet.

Deluxe Cage

In order for your pet to be truly comfortable and happy, he’ll need a good habitat. One Guinea pig should have, at the very least, 7.5 square feet of room. Bigger is better when it comes to animal care, however, so consider building your little pal a deluxe, roomy home. If you don’t have a lot of floor space, add a second level with an enclosed ramp or tunnel for access to the ‘penthouse’ suite.

Free Time

You wouldn’t want to sit in one room all the time, would you? Your Guinea pigs doesn’t either! Make sure your furball gets plenty of free time outside of his cage. Use this time to play with the little one, or teach him some cute tricks! Do you have questions about caring for a Guinea pig? Contact us, your Fayetteville NC vet clinic! We are here to help!
