Is Your Cat Bored?

June 15, 2017
Did you know that cats can—and do—get bored? We know, you probably wouldn’t expect boredom to be one of Fluffy’s top worries. After all, our feline pals are bona fide napping experts, and they often seem to enjoy doing as little as possible. However, it is actually very important to make sure your kitty is getting enough mental stimulation. Cats can get restless and unhappy with nothing to do! Here, a Fayetteville, NC vet discusses keeping your furball entertained.

Toys

Make sure your feline buddy has plenty of toys to play with and smack under the couch. Kitties have their own purrsonal tastes, so it may take a bit of experimenting to figure out if your furball prefers laser pointers, catnip mice, or other playthings. You can also pamper Fluffy with modern toys, like robotic mice, DVDs, or even apps for your phone or tablet.

Window Seat

Did you know that birdwatching is one of Fluffy’s favorite activities? Offer your kitty a window seat with a good view of your yard. Putting a birdhouse in your furball’s line of sight will make it even more fun!

Leaving Kitty Alone

Keep your kitty’s comfort in mind when leaving her home alone. We recommend leaving a ceiling light on, so Fluffy isn’t sitting by herself in a dark room. Your furball may also be more comfortable with a TV or radio playing softly.

Playtime

Taking a few minutes a day to play with your cat will benefit her in many ways, aside from sheer entertainment. The exercise Fluffy gets from pouncing and jumping will keep her in shape. Playtime also offers your furball beneficial mental stimulation.

Kitty Furniture

Cats really benefit from having some furniture of their own. Pet towers are great, because they allow your kitty to climb, scratch, nap, and survey her kingdom. Wall-mounted furniture can be great fun for felines that like to climb, while activity centers are wonderful for kittens.

TLC

Of course, one of the best things you can do for your cat’s well-being is to simply pay her lots of attention. Talk to Fluffy, pet her, and let her snuggle up on your lap. This will help her feel safe, secure, and loved, and will probably make you smile, too! Please contact us, your Fayetteville, NC animal clinic, for all your cat’s veterinary care needs.
