Mayday for Mutts

May 1, 2021
Is your pooch a mixed breed? If so, put a pawprint on your calendar for May 2nd: it’s Mayday for Mutts! Our canine companions come in all shapes and sizes. We love them all! Fayetteville, NC vet discusses mutts below.

Caring For A Mutt

Whether your furry pal is a papered purebred or a mix of several unknown breeds, he’ll have the same basic needs as any other dog: food, shelter, and veterinary care being the most crucial That said, breed does play a role in our canine friends’ health, and therefore in their care requirements. The good thing about mutts is that they tend to be healthier than purebreds, who are often at high risk of certain issues.  For instance, German Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia, while pugs often have eye problems.

Adopting A Mutt

Sometimes people are hesitant about adopting mutts, as they aren’t sure what to expect. Breed does affect Fido’s behavior, but so will his personality, training, and history. In fact, many times, mutts turn out to be the best of both worlds. If you think about it, purebreds all started out as mutts. Breeders work to develop certain traits, and over time, a new breed emerges.

Solving The Mystery

In many cases, you can take a pretty good guess about a pup’s breed (or breeds) by looking at them. There are also pups out there that look like the doggy version of Mr. Potatohead, with random—and often adorably mismatched—features. If you’re curious, you can do a doggy DNA test on your furry friend, and find out what he is.  There are some benefits to this, aside from just solving the mystery. For one thing, knowing your pet’s breed(s) can give you a heads up about any potential health hazards Fido might face down the road. You may also gain some insight about your furry friend’s behavior. For instance, if you can’t figure out why your pooch keeps digging up your yard, finding out that he’s mostly terrier would definitely shed some light on the situation. Just expect the unexpected: you may find that your guess was totally off!
